Custom Cedar Deck Expansion with Unique Vertical Handrail

This deck project required extensive planning and preparation—over six months—to ensure every detail was executed flawlessly. Both the homeowners and our team contributed ideas throughout the process, allowing the design to evolve into a truly custom solution.

The goal was to expand a smaller upper deck for entertaining while creating seamless access to a larger lower deck. We reinforced the existing structure, removed and replaced deck boards, and prepared post holes to support the new addition.

The homeowners requested cedar boards, which present unique challenges in Ohio’s climate. Cedar is untreated, meaning we had to carefully account for potential issues like weathering, staining, and warping to ensure a long-lasting finish. After careful scheduling, the project was executed during a perfect two-week stretch in June 2024, delivering exceptional results.

The deck features a rare vertical handrail system, and all cedar perimeter boards and stair treads were custom-routered to match the curves of the design. For our team, the most rewarding part of this job was the detailed planning and the opportunity to stretch our skills—projects like this remind us why we love what we do.
