From the beginning, this project stood out. Every member of the DLR team wanted in—and for good reason. This wasn’t just about building a deck… it was about adapting to the space and creating something completely custom.
Built Around Landscape — Not Over It
The homeowner came to us with a vision for a large back deck, along with raising their Bilco doors to match the new elevation. But once we stepped on site, the direction of the project started to evolve.
Natural rock formations surrounded the workspace—too unique to ignore.
Instead of working around the obstacles, we leaned into them.
As the build progressed, new ideas surfaced daily. Layout decisions weren’t rushed—they were developed in real time through collaboration, problem-solving, and experience.
Letting the Design Evolve
Once we finalized the direction, we began with the foundation:
Post holes dug and set for structural support
Framing installed with precision for long-term durability
Rim boards and floor joists laid out to define the structure

To integrate the natural rock into the final design, we used a scribing technique—carefully tracing each rock’s shape directly onto the decking boards.
Precision Cuts. Custom Fit.
Each cut was made using a jigsaw, allowing us to follow the contours as closely as possible.
It was time-consuming work. No shortcuts.
